Christmas in July

We’re celebrating Christmas in July at Shady Hollow!

Did you know that the summer can be extremely hard on our horses?

That’s why we have created a special Amazon Wishlist for several important items to get our horses through the hot and tiring summer. To learn more about why these items are important, keep reading!

Fly Repellent and Fly Masks: We’ve all spent a ton of annoying summer afternoons swatting flies away from our faces and legs. For horses, it’s not quite so easy! Plus, horse flies can leave nasty bites that can lead to infections. Roll-on fly repellent is especially good for faces and ears! Fly masks keep flies out of the eyes, helping reduce the risk of eye infections.

Peppermints: No, they don’t care about their breath. Peppermints are the perfect way to get some of our horses to take their medications! Have you ever put a pill into some pudding or applesauce to make it go down easier? This is the horse version!

Applesauce: Much like the peppermints above, applesauce is used for horses that need their medications crushed up. Some of our horses are just so picky that they won’t take their medication at all if they know it’s coming! Applesauce is a nice sweet treat to get those necessary medications down without a second thought.

Ivermectin: This is a treatment that all of our horses receive to prevent and treat worms. This helps keep our horses nice and healthy!

Stirrup Leathers and Leather Cleaner: Stirrup leathers get worn out, especially the lengths that we use for the most lessons. Leather Cleaner helps us keep all of the saddles in great condition!

Mane and Tail Conditioner, and Hoof Polish: Have you ever been outside on a windy day, and your hair gets so tangled that it’s a pain to try to brush through? Now imagine you have a huge mane and tail, and are outside most of the time! Mane and Tail Conditioner helps keep those tangles at bay. Hoof Polish keeps hooves nice and healthy so that they don’t crack.

Vetrolin Liniment: This is a super fancy word for “Horse Icy Hot”! Some of our horses are getting older, and they need a little extra T.L.C. after lessons.

Cephapirin Benzathine: Another super fancy word, but this one is to treat thrush in hooves. When it’s wet and muddy, moisture can get locked into the horses’ hooves causing a yeast infection. This is extremely painful for the horses, but is easily treated with this medication.

Stall Guards: When it’s hot out, we keep some of the barn doors open so there is more air flow. However, some of our clever horses have learned how to escape with just the built-in stall bar!! These stall guards will help keep air flowing and horses in their stalls.
